A 2007, eight week study found that a chiropractic adjustment can significantly lower blood pressure. The study looked at 50 patients with early-stage high blood pressure. A chiropractic adjustment to the atlas (the top bone in the neck) was adjusted in 25 of these patients while the other 25 patients received a sham chiropractic adjustment. The group who received the chiropractic adjustment had an average of 14mm Hg drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number) and an average of 8mm Hg drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number). Patients did not take their regular blood pressure medication while participating in the eight-week study.
Dr. George Bakris, MD, director of the Univeristy of Chicago hypertension center, was the leader of this study and stated, “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination.” Dr. Bakris also added, ” And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw not side effects and no problems.”
